Overview
The eWhammy is a compact, electronic whammy bar controller designed to control external gear or DAW plugins. It provides smooth, precise pitch control without the mechanical complexity of traditional whammy bars. Lightweight, low-profile, and easy to install, it offers a new approach to pitch modulation that preserves tuning stability, sustain, and instrument integrity.
Unlike traditional systems, the eWhammy isn’t tied to the bridge or strings. It’s highly adaptable and integrates easily into a variety of instruments. When paired with a high-quality DSP pitch-shifting device or plugin, it can maintain precise note intervals across all strings—something mechanical whammy bars simply cannot do. In traditional systems, each string responds differently to tension changes, making accurate chords impossible when the bar is engaged. With the eWhammy, chords retain their harmonic structure even while pitch-shifted.
The eWhammy isn’t limited to a single function. Pitch bend is just one application. It also isn’t limited to guitars—it can be used to control other instruments and systems, including keyboards and synthesizers.
Features
- Output: 0V–5V control voltage (CV) based on physical deflection.
- Hall effect sensing for precise, contactless, friction-free operation.
- CV conditioning controls via onboard trimmers: Center (2.5V neutral), Deadband, Range.
- Spring steel flex element to mimic whammy feel without added complexity.
- Low-profile, very few moving parts, minimal routing compared to traditional whammy systems.
- Genuine GOTOH parts with adjustable arm tension and height.
⚠️ The eWhammy is not a pitch-shifting pedal or audio processor. It’s a controller and does not produce sound on its own. Use it with a pitch-shifting device (hardware or software). It’s also not intended to replicate every nuance of traditional mechanical whammy systems.
CV or MIDI workflow
- Use CV directly with gear that explicitly supports your voltage range and wiring. The “expression pedal” world is not standardized, so do not assume it is plug-compatible.
- If you want MIDI pitch bend or MIDI CC, convert eWhammy’s CV to MIDI using Nexus or a dedicated CV-to-MIDI converter.
See CV to MIDI A Practical Guide for further details.
Controls
The dedicated CV-conditioning stage sits inline with the Hall effect sensor and provides three controls, set by default via onboard trimmer pots.
Center: Sets the neutral output so the CV rests at the 2.5 V midpoint when the whammy bar is at rest.
Deadband: Creates a neutral zone around center, stabilizing the resting position and helping it return cleanly to neutral when released.
Range: Sets sensitivity and the overall CV span, from subtle bends to wide intervals, up and down.
If you want external control, you can override Deadband and Range by wiring external pots to the DBO and RGO taps, after cutting the normally closed jumpers under the trimmers.
