My… it’s been a while since I’ve posted. Too much going on; I just can’t keep up! I wish I could share details, but it’s all under wraps for now, hence the blackout.
Anyway, Greg Gefell emailed me a few days ago. He’s made an interesting YouTube video showcasing his lap steel build, using the Nu Multi 8 connected to pitch shifters. Here’s the video:
Greg Gefell is a guitar and lap/pedal steel playing songwriter who has been active in the Rochester, NY music scene for the last 25+ years. Offstage he has done live audio, studio recording engineering and commercial video production. Onstage he is currently working mainly with the bands @Red 7.music, and @ClaudiaHoyser. He recently built an electronic stand-up pedal steel guitar that you can see in action at live shows or on Instagram @ggefell and YouTube @greggefell
In the video, Greg explains how he converted his lap steel into an electronic pedal steel guitar. By installing the Cycfi Nu Multi 8, he gained access to individual string outputs, letting him pitch-shift any string independently of the others. Digitally shifting notes up or down opens up a far wider array of chords and oblique harmonies than a few limited mechanical benders ever could.
He’s not the first to build such an instrument, actually. Next time, I’ll share another exciting pedal steel project named the OnePSG, from my friend Alan Pagliere, now in Beta!
