The E-Whammy: Controls

Schematics, and yet more schematics! Here, we talk about controls.

This is the final prototype. One last chance to verify everything before we go into production. Thanks to everyone who’s already reserved theirs. If you haven’t yet, there’s still time. Reserve your E-Whammy now: E-Whammy Reservation.

With the expanded electronics, I’ve split the design into two sections: the Hall-effect sensor circuit and the CV-conditioning stage—including controls for centering, deadband, and range.

Schematic

The Controls

  1. The center control ensures the CV rests at the 2.5 V midpoint when the whammy bar is in its neutral position.
  2. The deadband control defines a neutral zone around center—stabilizing the resting position and ensuring the system snaps back to neutral when the whammy bar is released.(See Center Stability and Center Stability Take Two).
  3. The range control sets the whammy bar’s sensitivity: its minimum and maximum CV span— from a few semitones to full octaves, up and down.
  4. By default, center, deadband, and range are “set-and-forget” on three onboard trimmer pots. You can override deadband and range by wiring external pots to the (DBO and RGO) override taps—just cut the normally-closed jumpers, below the trimmers, if you wish to connect external controls.
